South Carolina ports agency buying Fairlawn site as part of harbor deepening

he State Ports Authority will check another box off the list of preparations for harbor deepening this week by exercising an option to pay about $4 million for 1,100 acres of land adjacent to the Francis Marion Forest.

The property, part of the Fairlawn Plantation tract, will be used to mitigate an expected 334 acres of saltwater intrusion into freshwater wetlands during the upcoming dredging project, which will deepen Charleston Harbor to 52 feet.

“This is another exciting jump forward to getting the harbor deepening completed,” said Pamela Lackey, a member of the SPA’s board of directors.
