Youth apprenticeship programs on the rise in Charleston and statewide

If you asked Walter Newman a couple years back what he planned to do after he graduated high school, he wouldn’t have said manufacturing. But a guidance counselor noticed he liked to work with his hands and suggested he give it a try.

So he went to an open house for high-school apprenticeships, applied for an opening and became one of the Lowcountry’s first youth apprentices, taking a job in Ladson with the automotive parks maker VTL Group. Two years later, Newman, 18 years old and fresh out of high school, has a new full-time job fixing machines at VTL.
